Establishment of the Space Agency

Pakistan’s space program is spearheaded by the Pakistan Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO), which was established in 1961. SUPARCO has played a pivotal role in driving the country’s space ambitions, conducting research, and launching satellites.

Communication and Earth Observation Satellites

Pakistan has successfully launched a series of communication and Earth observation satellites. One notable achievement is the launch of Pakistan’s first remote sensing satellite, From  Geo News PakTES-1A, in July 2018. This satellite enabled the country to gather valuable data on weather patterns, agriculture, and land use. In addition, Pakistan has also launched communication satellites, such as PAKSAT-1R, which has significantly improved the country’s telecommunication infrastructure.

Collaboration with International Partners

Pakistan has actively sought collaborations with international space agencies and organizations to bolster its space capabilities. Notably, Pakistan became an associate member of the European Space Agency (ESA) in 2015 from Dawn. This partnership has provided Pakistan with access to advanced space technologies, research opportunities, and valuable knowledge sharing.

Astronaut Development Program

In a significant stride toward human space exploration, Pakistan has initiated the Astronaut Development Program. Under this program, Pakistani scientists and engineers are being trained to undertake space missions and contribute to scientific research in space. This program aims to position Pakistan among the nations capable of manned space exploration. A 12-year-old Pakistani student, Radeeyah Aamir, has been selected for a one-week internship program at NASA from The Express Tribune

The team of Germany and US-based scientists that made the breakthrough was spearheaded by Pakistani astrobiologist Dr. Nozair Khawaja, who is a researcher at the Freie Universität Berlin. His team was conducting research on data gathered from Enceladus’ hydrothermal core by the Cassini spacecraft operated by the United States National Aeronautics and Space Administration (Nasa).

Speaking to The Express Tribune, Dr. Khawaja said:

“I have found a small but soluble and reactive organic compound plumbing from the depths [ocean] of Enceladus. The compound from the ocean of Enceladus is already a known ingredient of amino acids found in the oceans of Earth.”

Space Science Research

Pakistan has made substantial contributions to space science research. Scientists and researchers from Pakistan have actively participated in international conferences, published scientific papers, and engaged in collaborative projects with renowned institutions worldwide. This emphasis on space science research has enabled Pakistan to expand its knowledge base and contribute to global advancements in the field.

“With each passing day, Enceladus is becoming one of the most habitable potential objects in the solar system to study traces of life after Earth. The next logical step should be to explore the Cassini in Space Exploration and Technology Development probe data and find more bio-signatures in the subsurface ocean of Enceladus. More space missions should be proposed and planned to explore this tiny world which is full of surprises,” said the Pakistani astrobiologist.

Future Plans

Pakistan has ambitious plans for the future of its space program. Some of the key objectives include:

  1. Launching advanced Earth observation satellites to enhance disaster management, resource monitoring, and urban planning capabilities.
  2. Establishing a dedicated satellite manufacturing facility to reduce dependency on foreign satellites.
  3. Expanding international collaborations to access cutting-edge technologies and participate in joint space missions.
  4. Developing and launching Pakistan’s first indigenous satellite launch vehicle.
  5. Continuing the Astronaut Development Program and aiming for manned space missions in the future.
